Solar can wipe your TNEB bill
A 2kW rooftop solar system generates ~240 units/month in Tamil Nadu — wiping the 201–500 slab entirely. PM Surya Ghar subsidy up to ₹78,000 applies.

How TANGEDCO calculates your bill differently from every other DISCOM in India — and why most national calculators give you wrong numbers.
Worked Example: 340 Units
Bi-monthly consumption · Single phase
Monthly average: ₹733/month
Why TNEB is Different
- TNEB reads your meter every 60 daysMost other DISCOMs bill monthly (30 days)
- Slabs apply to total 2-month consumptionYou cannot halve your reading to find your slab
- One fixed charge per bi-monthly billYou pay ₹100 once — not twice
- FCA (Fuel Cost Adjustment) added per unitAppears as "Fuel Surcharge" on your physical bill
Slab Management Tip — குறைந்த தட்டில் இருங்கள்
If you are at 480 units, cutting just 20 units over 3 days saves you from the ₹6.40 slab. The boundary jump (₹4.80 to ₹6.40) is worth ₹320 in savings for every 200 units kept below 500.

Situations that cause unexpected bill spikes in Tamil Nadu
The 501-Unit Trap
Using 501 units vs 499 units costs ₹32 more for just 2 units — because you cross into the ₹6.40 slab. Every unit above 500 costs 33% more.
Summer Spike (May–June)
AC usage in peak Tamil Nadu summer can push bi-monthly consumption from 300 to 700 units — tripling your bill from ~₹1,600 to ~₹4,500.
Reading Delay Trap
When the bi-monthly reading is delayed by 10–15 days, your next bill covers 75 days not 60. This can artificially push you into a higher slab.
How Your TNEB / EB Bill Is Calculated
TANGEDCO (Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation) calculates your electricity bill using a progressive slab system. This means the more electricity you use, the higher the rate you pay — but only on the portion that falls into higher slabs. You never pay the highest rate on all your units.
Step-by-Step: How Your EB Bill Amount Is Determined
- 1
Meter reading is taken every 60 days
A TANGEDCO meter reader visits your home and notes the current reading. Your previous reading (from 60 days ago) is subtracted to get your bi-monthly units consumed.
- 2
Units are split across four slabs
Your total bi-monthly units are divided into the four slab blocks shown in the table below. You pay each slab rate only on the units falling within that block.
- 3
Fuel Cost Adjustment (FCA) is added
A variable surcharge of approximately ₹0.35 per unit is added to reflect fuel procurement costs. This appears as a separate line on your physical bill.
- 4
Fixed charge is added
₹100 is added for single-phase connections or ₹200 for three-phase connections. This is a flat fee, not based on usage.
- 5
Subsidy is deducted (if eligible)
BPL card holders and eligible consumers receive 100 free units per bi-monthly bill. The subsidy is applied to the first slab.
Quick Example
If you used 340 bi-monthly units (single phase): 100 × ₹2.25 = ₹225 + 100 × ₹3.50 = ₹350 + 140 × ₹4.80 = ₹672 + FCA of ₹119 (340 × ₹0.35) + fixed charge ₹100 = ₹1,466 total. That is about ₹733 per month.
TNEB Domestic Tariff Slab Table (2026)
These are the official TANGEDCO domestic tariff rates applicable for all residential consumers in Tamil Nadu. Rates are per bi-monthly (60-day) billing cycle.
| Slab | Unit Range (Bi-Monthly) | Rate Per Unit | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Slab 1 | 0–100 units | ₹2.25 | Lowest slab — free for BPL/eligible consumers |
| Slab 2 | 101–200 units | ₹3.50 | +55% jump from slab 1 |
| Slab 3 | 201–500 units | ₹4.80 | Most Tamil Nadu homes fall here |
| Slab 4 | 501+ units | ₹6.40 | Highest slab — AC-heavy homes pay this |
Fixed Charge (Single Phase)
₹100 / bill
Fixed Charge (Three Phase)
₹200 / bill
Fuel Cost Adjustment
₹0.35 / unit
Important: TNEB bills are bi-monthly, so a slab applies to 60 days of usage. For example, the "0–100 unit" slab means 0–100 units over two months (approximately 0–50 units/month). Do not compare these slab thresholds directly with monthly-billing DISCOMs like MSEDCL or BESCOM.
Frequently Asked TNEB / EB Bill Questions
How is my TNEB EB bill calculated?
TNEB (TANGEDCO) uses a progressive slab system. Your bi-monthly (60-day) units are split into four blocks. The first 100 units cost ₹2.25 each, the next 100 cost ₹3.50 each, the next 300 cost ₹4.80 each, and anything above 500 costs ₹6.40 each. A Fuel Cost Adjustment of ₹0.35 per unit and a fixed charge (₹100 for single phase or ₹200 for three phase) are added to get your total bill.
What does "EB" mean on my TNEB bill?
EB stands for "Electricity Board" — it is the common name for TNEB/TANGEDCO in Tamil Nadu. When people say "EB bill" or "EB card," they are referring to their Tamil Nadu electricity bill. "EB reading" means the meter reading taken by TANGEDCO.
Why does TNEB bill every 2 months instead of monthly?
TANGEDCO operates on a bi-monthly (every 60 days) billing cycle as mandated by TNERC. This means your slab rates apply to two months of consumption, not one. A bill showing 400 units means you used approximately 200 units per month. This is different from most other Indian states, which bill monthly.
What is 1 unit in TNEB billing?
1 unit equals 1 kilowatt-hour (kWh) of electricity. For example, running a 100-watt bulb for 10 hours uses exactly 1 unit. Running a 1.5-ton AC (approximately 1,500 watts) for 1 hour uses about 1.5 units. Your TNEB bill shows total units consumed over the 60-day billing period.
How do I read my TNEB EB meter?
Your TNEB meter shows a cumulative number in kWh. To calculate your bi-monthly usage: subtract the previous reading (printed on your last bill) from the current reading. The difference is your units consumed. TANGEDCO meter readers visit every 60 days to record this reading.

சூரிய மின்சாரம் — How Solar Affects Your TNEB Bi-Monthly Bill
Tamil Nadu gets 5.5–6.2 peak sun hours/day. Under TNERC net metering, your solar export credits offset the next bi-monthly reading — keeping you permanently in the lower slabs.
